​Nektarios A Papadogiannis

Scientific Coordinator and Leader of XMMaS

Nektarios PAPADOGIANNIS is Professor of Physics and Vice-Rector at Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU). He is also Director of Research at Institute of Plasma Physics and Laser of HMU Research Centre. He received the Bachelor’s Degree in Physics from the University of Crete in 1990 and his MSc in 1992 in Atomic and Molecular Physics. In 1996 he was awarded with Ph.D. in Experimental Ultrafast Laser-Matter Interaction Physics from University of Crete in cooperation with Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser of Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (IESL-FoRTH), Heraklion, Greece and University Bernard Lyon I, Lyon France. Ηe has worked as a post-doc or collaborating researcher in various institutes along Europe among them in Max Planck Institute for Quantum Optics (Munich), Laboratoire d’ Optique Appliquée (Paris). His main research fields are the science and technology of the ultrafast and intense laser pulses and the ultrafast and intense laser secondary sources: VUV and XUV Coherent Light Sources, Coherent and Incoherent X-rays Sources, Laser generated pulsed Acoustic Waves, Electron and Proton relativistic particle sources.

Makis Bakarezos

Scientific Coordinator of XMMaS

Associate Professor Efthimios Bakarezos holds a BSc Hons degree in Physics (1995) from the University of Crete Heraklion, Greece, a MSc degree (Optoelectronic and Laser devices – 1996) and a PhD (Ultrafast nonlinear optics of wide-gap II-VI quantum wells and polymeric materials – 2000) from Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, UK. Currently, he is an Associate Professor in the Department of Music Technology and Acoustics of the HMU and a senior member at the Institute of Plasma Physics & Lasers. His research interests & activities are focused on ultrafast laser-based optoelectronic methods and arrangements, interferometric and holographic imaging methods, and electronic arrangements.

Michael Tatarakis

Professor, IPPL director

Michael Tatarakis is a Professor at the Department of Electronic Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering of the Hellenic Mediterranean University (HMU) with specialization in plasma physics, high power laser matter/plasma interactions and applications as well as in high current magnetically confined pulsed power plasma studies. He is the Director of the Institute of Plasma Physics & Lasers (IPPL). He received his PhD in 1997 from the Physics Department of Imperial College London and since then he has occupied several research positions at Imperial College London, at the Technical University of Crete at the TEI of Crete and at the HMU. He also holds a honorary visiting professorship at the Department of Physics of Imperial College London.

Emmanouil Benis

Assistant Professor

Emmanouil Benis is Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Ioannina, Greece.   His expertise is in the field of experimental atomic molecular and optical physics. His research is focused on the electron dynamics in collisions of highly charged ions with gases and in interactions of high-power lasers with matter. He is author of more than 70 peer-review articles and has an h-index of 18 (scopus). 

Vasilis Dimitriou

Associate Professor

 Associate Professor Vasilis Dimitriou received his B.Sc. in 1999 from the Mathematics Department of the University of Crete and his  M.Sc. in 2000 from the School of Mechanical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens – NTUA in the area of Automation Systems (2-year course). He was awarded by the Best Performance Scholarship by the State Scholarships Foundation of Greece -IKY. He received his PhD in 2004 from the School of Mechanical Engineering of the NTUA. Currently. He holds the Position of Associate Professor of the Hellenic Mediterranean University with specialization in Finite Elements in Engineering and Optoacoustic Applications. He is a Member of the three persons Administration Committee of the Institute of Plasma Physics and Lasers of the Hellenic Mediterranean University.

Yannis Orphanos

Laboratory Engineer

Dr Yannis Orphanos is working as Laboratory Teaching Staff in the Hellenic Mediterranean University (H.M.U.) and member of the Institute for Plasma Physics and Lasers (IPPL) of the H.M.U. He received his Bachelor’s degree (BSc) in Mechanical Engineering in 2003 from the Mechanical Engineering department of the T.E.I. of Crete, Greece. In 2008 he received his MSc degree in Optics & Vision from the Departments of Medicine, Mathematics & Physics of University of Crete, Greece. In 2015 he was awarded a PhD degree from the Material Science Department of University of Patras, Greece. His research focused in methodologies of dynamic nanoscopic material characterization using acoustic sources generated by ultrashort laser pulses. He has more than 12 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals (among them Applied Physics Letters, Optics Express, Microelectronics Engineering etc.) and conference proceedings with ~180 citations and Google Scholar h-index=8.

Stelios Petrakis

M.Sc. Stelios Petrakis

Stelios Petrakis received his Bachelor’s Degree on Physics from the Hellenic Open University, in 2008. He received his master’s degree in Microelectronics-Optoelectronics from the University of Crete in 2013. He is currently conducting his PhD thesis entitled: “Coherent and high brightness XUV sources using strong laser pulses”.

Alexandros Skoulakis

M.Sc. Alexandros Skoulakis

Alexandros Skoulakis received his Bachelor’s degree in Electronic Engineering in 2004 from the Department of Electronic Engineering of the Technological Educational Institute of Crete, Greece  He is an experienced researcher in pulsed powered plasma production, as well as in laser-based optoelectronic detection techniques.

​Costas Balas

Professor, Electronics Lab Director

In 2001 he joined as an Associate Professor Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering of the Technical University of Crete, Chania, Greece, where he developed Optoelectronics and Applications as a new research activity of the Department’s Electronics Lab. He is currently full Professor, Director of Electronics Laboratory and group leader of Optoelectronics Group and he teaches both undergraduate (Electronics I – HRY204, Optoelectronics- HRY412, Biomedical Technology–HRY513) and graduate courses (Advanced Topics and Applications in Electronic Imaging-HRY603, Optoelectronics-HRY607).

Nathanail Kortsalioudakis

Electronics Laboratory Researcher, Teaching Staff 

Dr. Nathanail Kortsalioudakis was born in Chania, Crete, in 1973. He holds a bachelor degree in Physics obtained by the University of Crete, a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Applied Physics and Technology of Lasers by the Department of Sciences-Physics Division of the Technical University of Crete (TUC) and a Doctorate of Philosophy (Ph.D.) by the same department. His doctoral thesis is entitled: “Interaction of laser radiation with matter, with emphasis on examining the physical mechanisms occurring during the propagation time of short high-intensity laser pulses in gases and solids”. Since May 2014, he has appointed as Laboratory Teaching Staff (EDIP) at the School of Electronics and Computer Engineering (ECE) of the Technical University of Crete. His research interests cover the thematic areas of Laser Physics, Photonics and Optoelectronics.

Panagiotis Tsopelas

Electronics Lab Researcher

Ο Παναγιώτης Τσόπελας είναι φυσικός  με εμπειρία στην εφαρμογή φυσικών μοντέλων για βαθμονόμηση συστημάτων νανολιθογραφίας με ακτίνες-Χ. Έχει βαθιά γνώση σε σένσορες και ολοκληρωμένα πυριτίου καθώς και την αλληλεπίδραση τους με φορτισμένα σωματίδια.  Ο Παναγιώτης έλαβε το Πτυχίο της Φυσικής από το Πανεπιστήμιων των Ιωαννίνων το 2007 και έπειτα επιτέλεσε τα στρατιωτικά του καθήκοντα. Μετά την λήξη της στρατιωτικής του θητείας, πήγε στο πανεπιστήμιο της Ουτρέχτης στην Ολλανδία για μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές πάνω στην Υποατομική Φυσική και το 2012 έλαβε το μεταπτυχιακό του  δίπλωμα. Έπειτα, εργάστηκε σαν υποψήφιος διδάκτορας στο Εθνικό Ινστιτούτο Πυρηνικής και ατομικής Φυσικής (Nikhef) στο Άμστερνταμ. Το θέμα της διδακτορικής του διατριβής ήταν η μελέτη αισθητήρων πυριτίου (silicon sensors) για την ανίχνευση σωματιδίων καθώς και ο χαρακτηρισμός και η επίδοσή τους έπειτα από μεγάλες δόσεις ακτινοβολίας. Έλαβε το διδακτορικό του το 2016 από το Vrije Universiteit του Άμστερνταμ. Μετά μετακόμισε στο Eindhoven όπου εργάστηκε για 3 χρόνια στην κορυφαία εταιρεία συστημάτων νανολιθογραφίας (ASML) στην αρχή σαν  Μηχανικός και έπειτα σαν Υπεύθυνος της Ομάδας Ανάπτυξης Μοντέλων στα πιο σύγχρονα μηχανήματα νανολιθογραφίας που λειτουργούν σε μήκη κύματος της τάξης των 13.5 nm. Το 2019 επέστρεψε στην Ελλάδα όπου εργάζεται στην ομάδα του καθηγητή Κων/νου Μπάλα στο Εργαστήριο Ηλεκτρονικής της σχολής των HMMY του Πολυτεχνείου Κρήτης. 

Athanasios Tsapras

Electronics Lab Researcher

Athanasios Tsapras holds a diploma in Electronic and Computer Engineering, a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree and he is a Ph.D. candidate of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering in Technical University of Crete. In 2009, trained in the area of Biophotonics in University of Lund, Sweeden. Has worked for 2 years in the R&D department of DySIS-Medical start-up. Since 2016 he is working in the R&D department of QCELL start-up – a spin-off company of Technical University of Crete – as a Photonics Engineer. Has participated as a researcher in 4 funded research projects and holds eight full text publications in journals and conferences. He has many years of experience in design, implementation, construction and quality control of scientific devices, emphasizing in biomedical instrumentation and hyperspectral imaging diagnostic devices.

Makis Pachos

Technical Manager – IKH

Following graduation from the National Technical University of Athens, Makis Pachos pursued a career in robotics automation and later in aerospace quality. Since 2018 he has managed a series of commercial and collaborative research projects related to robots for wind turbine inspection, heat exchanger cleaning and non-destructive testing.

Dimitris Zouridis

IKH Researcher

Dimitris has a long experience in electronic circuit design and industrial automation. His research projects at Physics department of the University of Crete involved excited dimers emission spectra of rare gas mixtures using either a supersonic expansion or a heavy-ion-beam excitation also the design of Excimer lasers.

Michalis Logothetis

Robotics Engineer Researcher

Michalis Logothetis received the Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2016 at National Technical University of Athens (NTUA), Greece. Then, he was working in European and National research projects for three years as Research Engineer in the field of Autonomous Control and Robotics at the school of Mechanical Engineering, NTUA. He is currently a Robotics Engineer in the Innovation department of IKnowHow S.A., Athens, Greece working for a variety of robotics related projects.  His main experience and research interests involve nonlinear control systems applications in sensor-based motion planning, control of cooperative robotics systems and human-robot physical interaction tasks having published 4 peer-reviewed conference and 1 journal papers.

Elvira Kontoy

Full Stack Developer Researcher

Full stack developer with 4+ years of experience in participating in all phases of software development of State Government and eCommerce enterprise projects. Elvira is experienced in a variety of technologies, tools and frameworks. Currently participating in an international team, involved in microservices development and system integration processes.

Giorgos Kleanthous

Robotics Engineer Researcher

Giorgos is a back-end developer with 10+ years of experience in software development. He has working experience in a wide variety of technologies, tools and frameworks. Currently participating in a large-scale insurance project and he is responsible for refactoring an existing body of code, altering its internal structure without changing its external behavior.
